YTTC likes to offer more than just academic experiences to our students during their stay with us. Here are just some of the things they can be involved with:
Sports
Great importance is attached to equipping students in a wide range of sports. It's a healthy body that supplies a healthy mind.
The college provides a large sports field which allows students to exercise and can accommodate football, netball and many track & field athletics events. This sports ground serves the whole community, including inter-primary athletics competitions and Yei County inter-club competitions. It was selected as the national sports training centre for the South Sudan National Team, which later played with the Harambe Stars of Kenya in Juba, in 2011.
YTTC provides an impressive identity in its sports attire; yellow, which symbolizes the plentiful sunshine; maroon, for brotherhood; and blue & white, for our abundant resources and peace.
Clubs
Students are encouraged to be involved in a variety of clubs. These are:
Guidance and Rehabilitation Services
The well being of all YTTC students is very important to management. Mentoring and coaching of students is a serious undertaking, so much so, that each student is allocated a tutor, referred to as their "parent", or "mentor".
Teacher trainees are mentored and coached on all aspects of life. Whatever problems or challenges the students are facing, they are free to approach their mentors and share their academic, social, or any other struggle which they may be experiencing. Tutors conduct both individual and group meetings with their families. These meetings can be initiated both by "parents" and by students themselves.
YTTC is aware of the various personalities of people, and through these mentoring and coaching groups students who are introverts can be helped and assisted. In the same way, grouping students enables them to talk to each other more freely, thereby bringing about tolerance, cultural awareness and peace building.
For all female students, YTTC provides a Senior Woman Tutor who can assist with any specific issues that they may feel unable to raise with their male tutors. As a college, we are committed to encouraging an increase in the number of female teachers in South Sudan since this country has the lowest female literacy rate in the world. It is important to us to provide whatever support we can for our female students. Our male students are the direct responsibility of the Dean of Students, who is available to assist with any matters where a problem more specifically applying to males may arise.
Worship
There are many opportunities for students to develop spiritually during their time at Yei Teacher Training College. This includes regular times set aside for group singing, bible teaching and fellowship, as well as opportunities to engage with 'family parents'/tutors to talk and pray with.
Every morning from 8-8.30am the college comes together to attend Devotion. This is where we hear college notices from the Student’s Guild and the staff. Each day we also hear from a preacher who talks about an aspect of their faith. These speakers can be students, staff members or special guests brought in from outside the college.
Environment
Yei Teacher Training College, since its outset, has put a lot of emphasis on the maintenance of the environment.
Throughout the week all students are expected to contribute to the on-going maintenance of the college grounds. In addition to maintaining the green nature of the campus, student teachers are trained to be aware of their responsibility to help minimize factors that lead to environmental degradation in our community.
In 2011 during the Republic of South Sudan independence celebrations, YTTC held a rubbish collection and recycling event in Yei which was very well received by the community. Students and tutors worked together to gather over six thousand empty plastic bottles for the construction of a mushroom house. In 2012 this initiative was repeated immediately prior to the one year anniversary of the Republic of South Sudan's independence. 90 school children and other members of the community joined in this task, with an official opening by the Yei River County Commissioner, Mr Juma David Augustine.
Yei Teacher Training College since 2001 trained teachers from different parts of South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda and DR Congo with broad based backgrounds. Our Alumni give the community they interact with the foundational experiences and the rich personal relationships that continue to enrich the young growing individuals in their daily lives, and the knowledge, skills and attitudes that the alumni use, exhibit our success stories.
Yei Teacher Training College alumni have spread throughout the region. The College acknowledges the importance of its alumni as they have to a greater extend, face lifted education background in the region and the Country at large.
The College has a structured strategy for carrying out alumni relations and activities specifically reconnecting the College with its alumni through a series of activities and events that encourage alumni to get engaged through alumni umbrella. The number one goal of alumni umbrella activities is to engage the College and the Alumni in an interactive relationship for mutual benefit, the alumni of the College acts as important link amongst the students, the alumna and the College fraternity.
On 8th December 2014 a first time ever alumni conference was organize since the inception of the college, the turn was good up to 170 members were in attendance coming from all over South Sudan, and the purpose of the conference was to
bring Yei TTC Alumni together and share experiences, foster unity among all Alumni members, to form an umbrella Association to handle Alumni issues, to be aware of being part and a stakeholder of the college and to identify a project that the Alumni can take charge. All the objectives of the conference were fulfilled; the more prominent one is the election of the executive members of the Alumni Association. The positions filled are: Chairperson, Vice chairperson, Secretary General, vice secretary general, Treasurer and Ten State Coordinators.
By Mr. Agoyi Deo Abdul
Office of the Dean of students
I salute everyone in Yei Teacher Training College, especially those who took and sacrificed their time to put up the plan to see that the college is existing at the very best level of training primary teachers all over the ten states of South Sudan as well as teachers from the bordering countries like Sudan, Congo, Uganda and so forth. They have set a history because “HISTORY IS MADE AND NEVER BOUGHT".
South Sudan being the youngest nation in the world needs education to equip herself with, to fight illiteracy, ignorance, corruption, greed, jealousy, hatred, discrimination and tribalism in order to prepare a better home for mankind and the future generation.
I therefore request the County authorities and the communities around that for the college to grow and expand, for the betterment of the country; it needs a wide area of land. The local authorities and the communities around should therefore be willing to give the college room to expand by releasing the land needed for expansion. The students also need to take good care of the property of the college because they are for everyone who studies in YTTC.
I thank the college management and the BOG.
Together we can build a better Yei Teacher Training College for all the inhabitants of South Sudan and the world.
God bless the People of south Sudan as a whole, and YTTC in particular.
Thank you.
Strive for Excellence.
YEI TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE, I would like to say, is a very special place for the people of South Sudan and to me in particular. Indeed to me, I can say, is the turning point in my life in the following ways:
ACADEMICS
Y.T.T.C is a real academic ground, given the quality of its qualified and committed tutors who have kept performance at its highest level. I have benefited from this very much because I am able to weigh my strengths now and how I was. I have seriously improved and very sure of doing even much better now, in high levels of studies. Thank you Principal and the entire staff for academic excellence in this college.
MENTORSHIP
Some students, I can say, might have not felt the love of their parents since they were born, probably because they had been separated due to the effects of the war that has dominated the history of this nation, SOUTH SUDAN; and on joining Y.T.T.C, they came to experience parental love from the fact that they are formed into families under the mentorship of a tutor, who takes the responsibility of a father or mother. This has influenced our lives so much that for me as an individual cannot measure the LOVE and CARE my own MENTOR, who is now a true mother; Mama JULIET DRIJARU ZILLY showed for me. I want to say that if today two to three people are admiring my life, it costed her a lot, though I still have my parents whose struggle is also paramount and placed me on the hands of MAMA here, in the COLLEGE. Hence, the mentorship of our dear TUTORS and the commendable leadership of our dear Principal Mr. KEPO JAMES and all his subordinates has changed the lives of the students positively.
STUDENTS’ LEADERSHIP
It is very free for any student to exercise his or her political aspirations because the college administration and its entire staff does not take any concern about elections for student leaders except the ELECTORAL COMMISSION, which is granted all the authorities and independence in executing its duties until it is accomplished. This has truly portrayed to us, how elections should be conducted.
Another thing related to this is that simplicity and commitment are the centre of success to any political position in the students’ leadership as imitated from the Principal of the college and its entire staff. It has become a practice for the students and considered as one of the major qualities required for the position of the Guild Presidency in particular. I became at one point connected to that which explains why I was lucky to have led the college as its Guild President from 2013-2014.
MY LEADERSHIP
I wouldn’t like to talk about my own leadership because I cannot see my own person but rather, another person sees better though I can touch a few of those things that I have felt myself.
First of all, on my joining Y.T.T.C, I had no interest to do any single responsibility at all because I just wanted to settle academically, having known the motto of the college as “STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE” but it just came as a dream because I found myself being pushed to stand for the Guild Presidency by both my elders; the then second year students and my own class mates, who gave me the encouragement to stand. That gave me a task of serious prayer until one evening I said, “God, may your will be done; not my own”, then I filled the application form which my elders took to the office themselves
The story is long;
However, what should be noted with great concern is that,
My government started being admired from the first week when I started my term of office as the President of the week and swept, dug, washed the toilets with my ministers which gave an example that the rest of the Ministers kept until the term ended on 27-7-2014, hence earning good reputation for my government.
Solving Disciplinary cases brought maximum discipline among students. Humility and loyalty to all my superiors also characterized my government taking it to the rank of; “The best government ever”, in the College.
I have not attributed this to ourselves in the government but to God who is the fountain of every good thing. May his name be praised? Amen.
Conclusively, I am indebted to the college administration, the entire staff; both teaching and non teaching, I.C.T department, my out- gone guild government and the entire year II 2013/2014, the current guild government and everybody who helped me in one way or the other in the college and beyond. I have recognized and appreciated your support.
I wish all the members of the out- gone guild government and the in- coming ones, a very prosperous new year. Don’t forget your roots, but let us look back to the college and contribute to its growth in one way or the other, according to our capabilities.
Thank you.
LONG LIVE THE PRINCIPAL KEPO JAMES, THE DEPUTIES, DEAN OF STUDENTS, AND ALL STAFF.
LONG LIVE THE YTTC ALUMNI
LONG LIVE THE GUILD GOVERNMENT 2013-2014
Peaceful Co- existence and Good governance for Academic Excellence in YTTC.
Y.T.T.C OYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
All students are members of the Guild which gives access to the management and running of the college. The students believe that by working together they can uplift YTTC.
As a nation emerging from war it is important that our students learn the principles of democracy. At YTTC we are preparing democratic leaders. They manage themselves by a structure that ensures student leaders are elected by use of a secret ballot available to all students, in the provisions of the Guild Council constitution.
Females are encouraged to run for Council and one of the articles of the constitution ensures that if the successful Guild President is a male, then a female must be appointed as Deputy Guild President and vice versa. This is in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan which advocates for 25% of women representation, which the constitution of the Guild also provides.
